Delay to completion of The Packway roadworks – The Packway will reopen on Tuesday 17 October

During the past four weeks, a considerable amount of progress has been made constructing the new  roundabout on The Packway. Gas, water, electricity and communications utilities have been laid and embedded within the groundworks. The utilities will  provide services to housing and the new primary school, which now has foundations and the erection of the steel work has almost completed.

An alteration was required to the ducting due to tightness of bends and new thicker cabling being required. Unfortunately the utility provider responsible for this activity did not achieve the agreed timeline and this has caused delays to the remainder of the programme of works. Pressure was applied to the utilities provider to try and minimise the impact on the local community but it has now been confirmed that the works will incur a delay of three weeks with The Packway reopening on 17 October 2017.

Throughout the period of closure and under the new highways agreement with Wiltshire Council, Tombs Road will be closed indefinitely to road moves at its junction to The Packway. The new roundabout construction can then be completed safely with the road reopening on 17 October 2017 followed by some periods of traffic light controlled, two-way traffic until December 2017. The diversionary route agreed with Wiltshire Council Highways, remains via the A303.

Fargo Road will remain CLOSED / BLOCKED OFF to all through vehicle traffic until The Packway reopens. This measure has been put in place in reaction to the safety concerns of the residents and that deliberately removing or ignoring these road closures is unsafe. Please use the A303 as your diversionary route until The Packway reopens in October 2017.

Since the last Travel Notice in August 2017, the roundabout has been fully excavated to its new levels.  During the excavation, we have had explosive ordnance and archaeological specialists on site, recording and resolving any issues arising along with embedding utilities. The roundabout is starting to take form, now that the utilities trenches and boxing have been resolved, with the edge capping almost complete. Once this is finished, the sub-base can be layered and compacted prior to the tarmac being laid.  Hardening of the roundabouts internal surface will then take place to allow military transporters to negotiate it without damage and the remainder of the roundabout will be laid with turf and signage.

We apologise for any disruption these works have caused and appreciate your understanding and patience.
