The Community Carol Concert in Lower Bemerton next Saturday (10th December) is going to be a very special occasion for the people of Lower Bemerton. For 8 years they have been planning and fund raising to create a community centre in the disused church of St John’s. A high point each year has been the fund raising carol concert in a cold and rather gloomy church, fetching water for teas and coffees from a stand pipe in the graveyard.
But the new St John’s Place was opened in June this year after a mammoth fundraising effort that brought in more than £600,000. It is a light, lovely and warm building in which the whole community can take pride.
“It will be wonderful to come together to celebrate Christmas in this lovely space” said the Rector Simon Woodley. “We have a Christmas Fair from 2 to 5 with mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas goodies and gifts on sale, then at 6 pm a carol concert with the Bemerton St John School choir singing and with readings by local people. Free entry, all welcome – and our fingers and toes will be cosy and arm!”
